Gilas Second Round status
Gilas Pilipinas begin the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers Second Round in fifth place in Group E. Their 2–4 First Round record and eight classification points carry over, so the campaign does not reset. The next verified game is Philippines vs Jordan in Manila on 28 August at 8:30 PM PHT, followed by Philippines vs Iran on 30 August at 8:00 PM PHT.
The position is difficult but still open. The Philippines trail fourth-placed New Zealand by two points and the Iran–Jordan pair by three. Six games remain across the August 2026, November 2026 and February 2027 windows.
How the Second Round works
Group E combines Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines from First Round Group A with Iran, Jordan and Syria from Group C. Every First Round result remains in the table. Each team now faces only the three opponents it has not already met, home and away.
The top three teams in Group E and Group F qualify for the World Cup. The best fourth-placed team across the two groups also qualifies, while Qatar already holds a place as host. Because the table carries over, point difference and every earlier result remain relevant.

Why the 2–4 record matters
The Philippines beat Guam twice in the First Round and lost twice each to New Zealand and Australia. Those six results are now the foundation of the Group E table. The close 69–66 loss to New Zealand and the 106–102 double-overtime loss in Auckland matter as much as the August games because all classification points travel forward.
Australia's perfect 6–0 record gives it the early lead. Iran and Jordan are one point behind, New Zealand holds fourth, and the Philippines shares eight points with Syria. Gilas therefore needs wins and must protect point difference, especially if the best-fourth-place route becomes decisive.
What Gilas needs to qualify
Base route
Win the home games that are available, beat Syria home and away, and stay within reach of fourth place before the final window.
Upside route
A Manila sweep over Jordan and Iran would move the Philippines to 4–4 and immediately reshape the top-four race.
Downside risk
Two August losses would leave Gilas needing a near-perfect finish across the November and February windows.
What is not decided
The Philippines are neither qualified nor eliminated. No clinching claim is justified before official table maths confirms it.
These are editorial scenarios, not guaranteed outcomes. The most important measurable factors are three-point efficiency, turnovers, defensive rebounding, the health and minutes of the primary creators, interior foul trouble and point-difference management.
Roster and coaching status
Tim Cone remains the Philippines head coach. As of 5 August, the final registered Window 4 roster is not officially published on the FIBA event page and is therefore TBC. A training pool, a previous window roster and the game-day twelve are different lists; this page will not treat circulated names as the final selection.
Justin Brownlee, June Mar Fajardo, AJ Edu, Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao, Scottie Thompson and other familiar names may shape public discussion, but availability must be confirmed by SBP or FIBA before it is presented as final.
Jordan and Iran matchup guide
Philippines vs Jordan · 28 August
Jordan enter the round at 5–1 and level with Iran on 11 points. Their scoring and guard creation make the opening Manila game a direct test of the Philippines' perimeter defence and defensive rebounding. A Gilas win would close the gap immediately; a loss would increase the pressure on the Iran game two nights later.
Philippines vs Iran · 30 August
Iran also carry a 5–1 record. Size, half-court discipline and experience are the central challenges. For Gilas, generating free throws, keeping the ball moving and avoiding empty possessions will matter more than forcing the pace for its own sake.
Where to watch in the Philippines
FIBA directs global viewers to Courtside 1891 on DAZN, while warning that territorial blackouts may apply. The specific Philippine broadcaster and platform for Window 4 have not yet been confirmed in an official announcement checked for this update. Fans should verify the individual FIBA game page and SBP channels close to tip-off.
