Quick answer: Alas Pilipinas Women open their SEA V.Cup 2026 campaign against hosts Vietnam on Friday, 31 July at 8:00 PM PHT (7:00 PM in Hanoi) at Đông Anh Gymnasium. It is Taka Minowa's first match as head coach, against a defending champion missing two of its biggest scorers.
The tournament state before first serve
Nobody has played yet — this is the opening evening of the entire leg, following Indonesia vs Thailand in the afternoon slot. That blank slate matters for how you read this match: there is no table to protect and no momentum to ride. What exists instead is asymmetric pressure. Vietnam open a home title defense in front of their own crowd; Alas open a new coaching era with a squad most observers haven't even seen finalized. One team has everything to lose on night one. It isn't the Philippines.
How Alas arrive
The pool travels under captain and setter Jia de Guzman, with PVL-honed names like Bella Belen, Eya Laure, Alyssa Solomon and Thea Gagate involved — but the final 14 had not been officially released as of 29 July, expected only around opening day. That means first-time viewers should watch structure, not names: does the first-ball contact look cleaner, does the middle tempo run faster, does the serving pressure rather than merely start rallies? Those are the early fingerprints of a Minowa team, whatever the line-up.
How Vietnam arrive
The hosts finalized 14 players on 25 July, adjusted once on 29 July (middle blocker Lưu Thị Huệ in for Nguyễn Phương Quỳnh), and carry two significant absences: opposite Hoàng Thị Kiều Trinh is injured, and 2025 leg MVP Nguyễn Thị Bích Tuyền is not on the published list. Their attack now runs disproportionately through captain Trần Thị Thanh Thúy — a world-class outlet, but a single point of failure if a defense commits to her.
The tactical matchup: force the hosts to prove their Plan B
Alas' path is unusually legible. Load the block and backcourt toward Thanh Thúy's window, live with the risk elsewhere, and make Vietnam's secondary hitters beat you on opening night nerves. On the other side of the net, expect Vietnam to serve aggressively at a Philippine reception unit that has never played a competitive match in this system — the fastest way to expose a new structure is to deny it first-ball quality.
Strengths, side by side
- Vietnam: home crowd; a core that has won together (2025 champions); Thanh Thúy's shot-making against any block.
- Alas Pilipinas: genuine freedom from expectation; athleticism and speed; an unscouted system — Vietnam have zero film on Minowa's version of this team.
What a win means — and what a loss means
A Philippine win would be the loudest possible opening statement of the new era and would immediately reshape the leg's placement math. A competitive loss — sets won, long rallies, visible structure — is the realistic benchmark and still counts as progress banked for the Thailand match twenty hours later. For Vietnam, anything but a win triggers alarm bells: with Thailand looming on Sunday, the hosts cannot afford to donate points on night one.
Where to watch
No Philippine broadcaster or stream was officially confirmed as of 29 July — this page names a platform only once a first-party announcement exists. The match is carried in Vietnam on the federation's YouTube channel and the VTVPrime app.
